Daily 9.30am-10pm; $19.50, child $8.50; Aquarium Pass including STA ferry from Circular Quay $23.20, child $10.70; www.sydneyaquarium.com.au. Beside the eastern side of Pyrmont Bridge is the Sydney Aquarium , which has its own wharf: you can also visit the aquarium with Captain Cook Cruises from no. 6 Jetty at Circular Quay . If you're not going to get the chance to explore the Barrier Reef, the aquarium makes a surprisingly passable substitute. The entry level exhibits freshwater fish from the Murray-Darling basin, Australia's biggest river system, but speed past these to get to the two underwater walkways, where you can wander in complete safety among sharks and gigantic stingrays. Another area features exotic species from the Great Barrier Reef, including a mass of glowing, undulating Moon Jellyfish. The Great Barrier Reef Oceanarium finishes with a huge wall-to-ceiling tank where you can sit and be mesmerized while classical music plays. Alongside all the fish, there are also platypus, seals and fairy penguins on display. Removed here after becoming lost or injured, the seals at least seem to be enjoying themselves in their glass-walled outdoor pool, but the sad looking Fairy Penguins appear most out of place.
