From Tumbalong Park in Darling Harbour, a signposted walkway leads to the Powerhouse Museum on Harris Street in Ultimo. Located, as the name suggests, in a former power station, this is arguably the best museum in Sydney, a young and exciting place with fresh ideas, combining arts and sciences, design, sociology and technology under the same roof - and even fashion, with the much-anticipated "Fashion of the Year" display every November. Besides this, there are always one or two special exhibitions, which might range from showcasing cars to fabulous Korean costumes. The entrance is dominated by the huge Boulton and Watt Steam Engine , first put to use in 1875 in a British brewery; still operational, the engine is often loudly demonstrated. The Kings Cinema on level 3, with its original Art Deco fittings, shows newsreels and films that a typical Sydneysider would have watched in the 1930s. Judging by the tears at closing time, the special childrens' areas have also proved a great success . On level 5, there's a colourfully painted licensed restaurant while downstairs there's a more inexpensive courtyard cafeteria. The souvenir shop is also worth a browse for some unusual gifts.
