Mon-Fri 9.30am-5.30pm, Sat & Sun 9.30am-6pm; closes 1hr earlier in winter; $4.50. In the southeast corner of Darling Harbour, just beyond Chinatown, the Chinese Garden was completed for the Bicentenary Festival in 1988 as a gift from Sydney's sister city Guangzhou. The "Garden of Friendship" is designed in the traditional southern Chinese style. As you wander the miniature landscape, plaques in delightfully formal language tell you how best to experience and understand the various viewpoints. Although not large, it feels remarkably calm and spacious - a great place to retreat from the commercial hubbub to read a book, smell the fragrant flowers and listen to the lilting Chinese music that fills the air. The balcony of the traditional tearoom offers a bird's-eye view of the dragon wall, waterfalls, a pagoda on a hill and carp swimming in winding lakes.
