Sydney's Chinatown takes over the Haymarket area west of George Street between Liverpool Street and Hay Street, up to the edges of Darling Harbour. It's centred on Dixon Street Mall , entered through Chinese gates, and buzzes day and night as people swarm into numerous restaurants (including Australia's biggest-seater, the Kam Fook ), pubs, cafes, cinemas, food stalls, Asian grocery stores and funky fashion shops. Towards the end of January or in the first weeks of February, Chinese New Year is celebrated here with gusto: dragon and lion dances, food festivals and music compete with the noise and smoke from strings of Chinese crackers. Near the edge of Chinatown on the southern fringes of Darling Harbour is the serene Chinese Garden . Every Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Paddy's Market , Sydney's oldest (1869), is conducted in its undercover home at the corner of Thomas and Quay streets, selling everything from fresh produce to cheap and cheerful new clothes. Above the old market, the buzzing multilevel Market City Shopping Centre has an excellent top-floor Asian food court next to a multiscreen cinema.
