Northern New South Wales may have nothing to match the majesty of the Snowy Mountains, as the Dividing Range falls away to the lower slopes that protect the New England Plateau , but the World Heritage-listed temperate and subtropical areas of the range's northeast end harbour sixteen pockets of rainforest which more than compete in terms of natural beauty. In many ways the north is more varied than the south, offering a taste of everything: big resorts and empty beaches on the coast, with alternative-lifestyle villages and communes in the hinterland beyond; lovely parks and forests on the steep slopes behind the coast; and further inland quietly attractive agricultural country, dotted with interesting old towns. The roads are generally in fairly good condition, but the busy Pacific Highway is not the best of them. Though it's gradually being upgraded and widened, with the addition of much-needed overtaking lanes, sections of this winding coastal road are still alarmingly narrow considering the weight of traffic and the big trucks that use it; bus services on the highway almost invariably run late. The inland route on the New England Highway via Muswellbrook, Tamworth and Armidale is a faster alternative if you're heading straight for Brisbane - plenty of buses go this way too.
