Sandwiched between the popular tourist areas of Margaret River and Albany's Rainbow Coast, the forests of the so-called Tall Timber Country are one of WA's greatest sights. Along with the sinuous Blackwood River (ideal for sedate canoeing, especially west of Nannup), the highlight of the region is the brooding, primeval majesty of the karri forests , known not as much for their arboreal gimmicks - of which the "climb-if-you-dare" Gloucester Tree near Pemberton is the best-known - as they are for the raw, elemental nature of the unique forest environment. Logging remains this region's primary industry and small towns, each with their own mill, busy themselves with their controversial work, while Pemberton is prospering through tourism, with its woodcraft galleries and scenic drives. Public transport is much improved with the new Augusta-Pemberton link, but you'll get much more out of a visit by renting a car.
