Once you escape Sydney's uninspiring outer suburbs, the journey south is very enjoyable. Beyond Botany Bay and Port Hacking, the Princes Highway and the Illawarra railway hug the edge of the Royal National Park for more than 20km. South of the park, the railway and the scenic Lawrence Hargrave Drive (Route 68) follow the coast to Wollongong . Between here and Nowra, the ocean beaches of the Leisure Coast are popular with local holiday-makers, while fishermen, windsurfers and yachtsmen gather at Lake Illawarra , a huge coastal lake near Port Kembla. A few kilometres further down the coast is the famous, and often lethal, blowhole at Kiama . Inland, west of Wollongong, Sydney's drinking water is stored in the Cataract and Cordeaux reservoirs , surrounded by picnic and leisure areas. Further southwest, past Kangaroo Valley , the softly rolling hills of the Southern Highlands are dotted with old country towns such as Berrima and Bundanoon , the latter overlooking the wild and windswept crags of Morton National Park . Transport down south is good, with a frequent train service operating between Sydney and Nowra, stopping at most of the coastal locations detailed on this website. The main bus service is Pioneer Motor Service, which stops at Wollongong and Kiama en route to Bega and Eden (tel 02/4423 5233; 3-4 daily Mon-Fri, 1 daily Sat & Sun). Greyhound Pioneer (tel 13 2030) has a daily Sydney-Melbourne coastal route (departing 11.30am) which also stops at Wollongong and Kiama.
