The Hawkesbury River widens and slows as it approaches the South Pacific, joining Berowra Creek, Cowan Creek, Pittwater and Brisbane Water in the system of flooded valleys that form Broken Bay . The bay and its surrounding inlets are a haven for anglers, sailors and windsurfers, while the surrounding bushland is virtually untouched. Three major national parks surround the Hawkesbury River: Ku-Ring-Gai Chase in the south, Brisbane Waters facing it across the bay, and Dharug , inland to the west. The Pacific Highway up here, partly supplanted by the Sydney-Newcastle Freeway, is fast and efficient, though not particularly attractive until you're approaching Ku-Ring-Gai Chase; if you want to detour into the park or towards Brooklyn, don't take the freeway. The rail lines follow the road almost as far as Broken Bay, before they take a scenic diversion through Brooklyn and Brisbane Waters to Woy Woy and Gosford.
