Wildlife
Watch out for bears, deer, moose, mountain lions and rattlesnakes in the backcountry, and consider the effect your presence can have on their environment. Other than in a national park, you're highly unlikely to encounter a bear . Even there, it's rare to stumble across one in the wilderness. If you do, don't run, just back away slowly. As friendly as they may appear, they are wild animals. Most fundamentally, they will be after your food, which should be stored in airtight containers when camping. Ideally, hang both food and garbage from a high branch (too weak to support the weight of a bear) some distance from your camp. Never attempt to feed bears (frequently they'll beg, but once fed will become aggressive in their demands for more), and never get between a mother and her young. Young animals are cute; irate mothers are not.
