To send a telegram (sometimes called a wire), go to a Western Union office (listed in the telephone directory). Credit card holders can dictate messages over the phone or send them via the internet at . International telegrams cost slightly less than the cheapest international phone call ($9.95 for 250 words): one sent in the morning from the US should arrive at its overseas destination the following day. For domestic telegrams ask for a mailgram , which will be delivered to any address in the country the next morning. Public fax machines, which may require your credit card to be "swiped" through an attached device, are found at photocopy centers and, occasionally, bookstores.
