If you're not content sitting around the zocalo over a coffee or a beer, whiling away a balmy night to the accompaniment of mariachi or brass bands, don't expect too much of evenings in Oaxaca. The folk dances at the Camino Real Oaxaca and Monte Alban hotels are another possibility, but there's nothing much more lively even at weekends. Weeknights are quieter still, though there is frequently some kind of cultural activity outside both the church of Santo Domingo and the cathedral. Candela , Murguia 413 (tel 9/514-2010). The Candela comes alive after 11pm when the dance floor is packed with locals and tourists coming to practice their salsa, rhumba and merengue, accompanied by a live band. The older generation flock here at weekends (US$2.50 cover). Divina , Gurrion 104. Funky bar decorated with masks and model animals in the setting of the Santo Domingo church, with music that doesn't blow your ears off. Eclipse , Diaz 219. Mainstream American dance music, with expensive drinks and a cover charge Fri and Sat nights. Ermita , Iturbide 100. Live music (piano, Mexican and boleras ), a mescal gallery, garden and board games. La Sol y La Luna , Reforma 502. This restaurant by the cathedral also has jazz Thurs - Sat, from 9pm. US$2 cover. La Tentacion , Matamoros 101. Live Latin and rock every night 9pm-midnight. No cover. London , Hidalgo 1002 at Fiallo. A (very loosely) Beatles-themed bar - apparently there's a twin called Liverpool somewhere out in the suburbs - with live music daily 10pm-1am. No cover and reasonably priced drinks. Minorcu , 5 de Mayo 411. Rock and Latin American music, with live performances from 8pm onwards. No cover. Otra Cosa , Libres 205. Rock and blues bar. No cover. Sagrario , Valdivieso 120. Latin music from 9pm to 2am. No cover. Tres Patios , Cosijopi 208. Relaxed jazz and blues Wed-Sat from 10pm. US$1.50 cover.
