Arrival
Both bus stations in Oaxaca are a good way from the centre - at least thirty-minutes' walk. First-class (with guarderia) is on Calzada Ninos Heroes de Chapultepec, north of the centre, from where your best bet is to get a taxi in; if you're absolutely determined to walk, turn left along the main road about four blocks to Av Juarez, left again for nine or ten blocks to Independencia or Hidalgo, then right to the zocalo. Once you reach Juarez you can pick up city buses. The second-class terminal - where you'll find a casa de cambio with good rates (daily 9am-7pm) and a guarderia (6am-9pm) - is west of the centre by the new market buildings: walk past these, across the train tracks and the Periferico, and on up Trujano towards the centre. From the airport , 5km south of the city, a colectivo service (Transportacion Terrestre Aeropuerto) will drop you right by the zocalo for under US$2. On leaving, you should buy tickets in advance wherever possible - especially for early morning departures on popular routes, to Mexico City or to San Cristobal.
