South of the Plaza de Armas, the churches of San Francisco and Nuestra Senora de Aranzazu face each other across Av 16 de Septiembre. San Francisco lies on the site of what was probably Guadalajara's first religious foundation - a Franciscan monastery established in the years just after the Conquest. The present church was begun in 1684 and has a beautiful Baroque facade. Aranzazu, by contrast, is entirely plain on the outside, but conceals a fabulously elaborate interior, with three wildly exuberant, heavily carved and gilded churrigueresque retablos. The Jardin de San Francisco , which would be pleasantly peaceful were it not for the number of local buses rattling by, lies across from these two.
