To the north of the city, out at the end of Calzada Independencia, the Barranca de Oblatos is a magnificent 600-metre-deep canyon, along the edge of which a series of parks offer superb views and a welcome break from the confines of the city. The Parque Mirador (take buses marked "Parque Mirador" north along Independencia) is a popular family spot with picnic areas and excellent views, while the Parque Barranca de Oblatos (bus #603 from Vicente Guerro at the southwest corner of the Hospicio Cabanas) is more of a student haunt with a swimming pool, picnic areas and plenty of young lovers. Also near the edge of the canyon, the city zoo (Tues-Fri 10am-5pm, Sat & Sun 10am-6pm; US$2.50; bus #60 or trolley-bus north on Independencia) has superb views from its northern end, along with a relatively well-kept selection of Mexican and international wildlife.
