Heading from San Cristobal to the Yucatan, the best route takes you to Palenque (5hr), via Ocosingo , on a good paved road that's frequently used by buses and colectivos. It's an impressive and beautiful journey as the road winds around the spectacular mountain valleys, lush with greenery, and it's easier than ever to stop off here and visit Tonina ruins and the awesome waterfalls at Agua Azul along the way. Ocosingo is also the starting point for adventurous trips by light aircraft or by combi to the beautiful Laguna Miramar , at the heart of the Montes Azules Biosphere Reserve . Ocosingo and the surrounding area was a centre of the Zapatista rebellion, so be prepared to be searched by the Mexican army as you travel around. In the largely Tzeltal villages around Ocosingo, all of the women, if none of the men, wear traditional clothing.
