Beyond San Cristobal, the Pan-American Highway continues to the border through some of Chiapas' most scintillating scenery. Amatenango del Valle is a Tzeltal-speaking village with a reputation for good unglazed pottery, but Comitan is the only place of any size - jumping-off point not only for the Guatemalan border and for the Lagos de Montebello National Park , but for the Classic period Maya sites of Junchavin and Tenam Puente.
