Arrival and Information
If you're arriving by air , Yellowknife's airport is 5km west of the city on Hwy 3. Car rental companies at the airport include Budget (tel 873-3366): elsewhere try Yellowknife Motors on the corner of 49th Avenue and 48th Street (tel 873-4414). Taxis to downtown from the airport cost around $12: call City Cab (tel 873-4444) if you need a ride. Three buses are run weekly by Frontier Coachlines (tel 874-2556) shuttle from Hay River via Fort Smith (around $80 one-way). The Northern Frontier Regional Visitors Centre is on the edge of Frame Lake just north of the Northern Heritage Centre at 4807 49th St (mid-June to late Aug daily 8am-6pm; rest of the year Mon-Fri 9am-5pm & Sat-Sun noon-4pm; tel 873-4262). The post office is at 4902 50th St, and the Stanton Regional Hospital is off Old Airport Road at Range Lake Road (tel 920-4111). For the police , call 669-1111. To rent camping gear, canoes, snowmobiles, fishing tackle and other outdoor equipment , contact Narwhal Northern Adventures, 101 5103-51st Ave (tel 873-6443, fax 873-0516), the latter canoe-trip and -rental experts for over 25 years. The visitors centre has bike rentals (June-Aug only) at $5 an hour, $12 a half-day or $20 a day .
