The Northern Frontier is the broad sweep of lake-spotted barren land between the Great Slave and Great Bear lakes, and is largely the playground of canoeists and naturalists, or of hunters on the trail of the region's 400,000-strong herd of caribou. At its heart lies Yellowknife , Canada's most northerly big town and until 1999 the capital of the NWT . Despite its surreal inappropriateness in a region of virtual wilderness, it's not worth making a special trip to see - though you may find yourself passing through, as it's the main transport hub for movement throughout the territories. Buses run here from Edmonton via Hay River, and there are regular Canadian North and NWT Air flights from all major Canadian cities, as well as numerous smaller airline connections from most NWT destinations. For information and useful brochures on the region, contact NWT Arctic Tourism, Box 610, Yellowknife, NWT X1A 2N5 (tel 873-7200 or 1-800/661-0788, fax 873-4059).
