Most casual visitors stick to Graham Island , where the bulk of the island's roads and accommodation are concentrated along the eastern side of the island, between Queen Charlotte City in the south and Masset some 108km to the north. These settlements and the villages in between - Skidegate, Tl'ell and Port Clements - lie along Hwy 16, the principal road, and shelter in the lee of the islands, away from a mountainous and indented rocky west coast that boasts the highest combined seismic, wind and tidal energy of any North American coastline (producing treacherous seas and a tidal range of 8m). Much of the east coast consists of beautiful half-moon, driftwood-strewn beaches and a string of provincial parks where you can appreciate the milder climes produced by the Pacific's Japanese Current, a warming stream that contributes to the island's lush canopy of thousand-year-old spruce and cedar rainforests. On the downside, though, it drenches both sides of the island with endless rainstorms, even in summer. Make sure you pack a raincoat.
