Inuvik may be the best place to rent a car for the far north, because southern firms tend not to rent vehicles for rough roads, and make hefty charges if you return a car that's obviously been over gravel: Delta Auto Rentals, 25 Carn St (tel 777-3535), Marcon Rentals (tel 777-4700) and Norcan Leasing (tel 777-3044) rent out suitably robust trucks, four-wheel-drives and pick-ups. Most people who come to Inuvik take a tour of some description. The town's two big tour operators are both well worth investigating, as each runs a selection of affordable daily boat and plane tours as well as longer fully blown tours and expeditions: contact the Arctic Tour Company (tel 777-4100 or 1-800/661-0721, fax 777-2259), almost opposite the Igloo Church at 181 Mackenzie Rd. Day-trips include tours to the tundra, to Hershel Island, to a traditional bush camp, boat tours on the Mackenzie River, beluga whale-watching and trips to Aklavik by boat or plane; longer tours include three- to five-day trips to Bank's Island and Sachs Harbour to watch wildlife (notably musk ox); whale-watching trips; and a nine-day Mackenzie River trip to Yellowknife. Arctic Nature Tours (tel 777-3300, fax 777-3400), with forty-years' experience of the region, run similar trips, but - as their name suggests - have a special bias towards wildlife: trips include tours to view Dall's sheep in the Richardson Mountains, Arctic safaris, Barrenlands photography tours, boat and plane trips to view the Porcupine Caribou Herd, and bird and wildlife visits to Hershel Island. Both these and other companies also run trips to all the fly-in communities of Aklavik, Tuktoyaktuk, Paulatuk and Sachs Harbour.
