Inuvik Practicalities

Practicalities

Canadian North (tel 669-4000 or 1-800/661-1505) has daily scheduled flights to Inuvik's Mike Zubko airport (12km south of town) from Edmonton, usually via Yellowknife, Fort Smith or Hay River. Several regional airline companies also run regular services from Yellowknife, Whitehorse, Dawson City and between the numerous smaller destinations in the NWT. The main ones (all area codes tel 867 unless stated) are Air North (tel 668-2228, www.airnorth.yk.net ); Aklak Air (tel 777-3555); Alkan Air (tel 668-2107); and First Air (tel 613/839-3340 or 1-800/267-1247).

A taxi (tel 777-5050) from the airport should cost around $25-30. As elsewhere in Canada and the NWT, the cheapest way of getting to Inuvik may be to buy an Air Canada pass before arriving in Canada . When talking to airlines about onward flights to the fly-in communities or elsewhere, remember that local tour companies often use their scheduled flights, and may be able to offer better flight-only deals than the airlines . In summer a bus service operates from Dawson - its Inuvik office is at 181 Mackenzie Rd (tel 979-4100 or toll-free in northern BC and the Yukon 1-800/661-0721); the Dempster Hwy is open year-round except for brief periods during the November freeze and April thaw.

For information on Inuvik and the region, contact the Western Arctic Visitor Centre (mid-May or June to Sept daily 9am-8/9pm; tel 777-3777), located near the entrance to town at the eastern end of Mackenzie Road at the junction with Loucheux (10min walk from the centre). In town you can dig out more background to the area and access the Internet at the Inuvik Centennial

Library (Mon & Fri 2-5pm, Tues-Thurs 10am-9pm; tel 777-2749) on Mackenzie Road west of the Igloo church, and pick up maps , guides , books and charts at the Boreal Bookstore (tel 777-3748), located almost opposite the church at the Arctic Tour Company office, 181 Mackenzie Rd. The post office is at 187 Mackenzie Rd (tel 777-2749), and the hospital (tel 777-2955) is at the eastern end of town close to the visitor centre. For the police , call 777-2935.
