The Town
You should start any wander on Front Street , the leading edge of a street grid that runs parallel to the Yukon River and at the junction with King Street is home to the impressive Tourism Yukon Visitor Reception Centre (mid-May to mid-Sept daily 8am-8pm; tel 993-5566, www.dawsoncity.com ). Loaded with a huge amount of material, the place also has a Parks Canada desk and shows good introductory archive and contemporary films throughout the day, as well as letting you leave your bag or pack ($1) while you explore. It also organizes walking tours (June to mid-Sept several daily; $5) of the town's heritage buildings - though these are easily seen on your own, as are the cabins that belonged to two chroniclers of the gold rush, poet Robert Service and the better-known Jack London . The local museum is also good for an hour, and you might want to dabble in the casino , though when all's said and done it's the atmospheric streets of Dawson that are most compelling.
