While in Dawson, make a point of seeing the two creeks where it all started and where most of the gold was mined - Bonanza and Eldorado , both over 20km away from the town site along rough roads to the southeast. These days no big working mine survives in the region, though most of the claims are still owned and definitely out of bounds to amateurs. However, it's still possible to see some of the huge dredges that supplanted the individual prospectors, once the easily reached gold had been taken out. Another popular local excursion is to Midnight Dome , the gouged-out hill behind the town, while further afield numerous RVs, cyclists and hitchhikers follow the Top of the World Hwy , which runs on beyond the Alaskan border to link with the Alaska Hwy at Tetlin Junction.
