Transport and Supplies
Dyea Dave (tel 983-2731) runs a shuttle bus ($10) from Skagway to Dyea, the start of the trail some nine miles northwest of Skagway. The trail finishes at Bennett, where you can get Tutshi Charters (tel 867/821-4905) to take you across Lake Bennett to Carcross (Can$65) to meet the Whitehorse-bound Gray Line bus. Alternatively you can walk the eight miles to the highway at Log Cabin (there's a short cut off the trail which avoids Bennett) and meet up with Dyea Dave ($25 for a combined drop-off and pick-up); or return to Skagway on the WP&YR railroad. In June, July and August there is the Chilkoot Trail Hikers Service (departs 1pm Alaska time; $25 one-way to Fraser, $65 to Skagway) which is either a railcar or one carriage of the Lake Bennett Excursion that's specially designated for smelly hikers. Remember to buy your tickets before you set off on the trail or you'll have a $15 fee added to the ticket price for the convenience of buying your ticket on the train; and note that for customs reasons the train doesn't stop at Log Cabin. Remember to take wet-weather gear, matches, some method of water treatment, sun screen, sunglasses, a flashlight and thirty feet of rope so that you can sling your food, toothpaste and any scented items over the bear poles at each campsite. Early in the season when there's plenty of snow about, consider gaiters , which can be rented in Skagway.
