Reservations and Permits
An advance information pack ($5) can be ordered by calling the reservation system (tel 867/667-3910 or 1-800/661-0486 between 8.30am and 4pm Pacific Standard Time), or by writing to Chilkoot Trail National Historic Site, 205-300 Main St, Whitehorse, YT, Y1A 2B5. Throughout the hiking season, the number of hikers crossing the Chilkoot Pass into Canada is limited to 50 per day, of which 42 places can be booked in advance ($11) by calling the reservation system. The remaining 8 places are offered on a first-come, first-served basis after 1pm on the day before you plan to start the trail from the Skagway Trail Center , Broadway at 1st Avenue in (late May to early Sept daily 8am-4pm). The busy season is July and the first two weeks of August: outside this time you probably don't need to make a reservation. Whichever way you secure a place on the trail, all hikers need to go to the Trail Center to buy a permit ($40), sign a register (for customs purposes) and consult the weather forecast. You'll need to carry identification , which means a birth certificate for North Americans (a driver's licence is not acceptable) and a passport for everyone else. You may be required to deal with Canadian customs at the Chilkoot Pass ranger station but more likely you'll do it after your hike at the Alaska-Canada border post at Fraser or in Whitehorse. If you have made an advance reservation, you'll already have the Canadian Parks Service's Chilkoot Trail map (otherwise $2 from the Trail Center or the Canadian Parks Service office at the SS Klondike in Whitehorse), which is about the best available.
