Cypress Provincial Park , most westerly of the big parks that part-cover the dramatic mountains and forest visible from Vancouver's downtown, is perhaps among BC's most visited day-use parks and probably the most popular of the north shore's protected areas. It takes its name from the huge old red and yellow cedars that proliferate here. Something of a hit with locals who prefer their wilderness just slightly tamed, its trails can be rugged and muddy, but they're always well marked, and even just a few minutes from the parking area you can feel in the depths of the great outdoors. There are several good trails, including the three-kilometre Yew Lake Trail - wheelchair-accessible - and the main park trail, which climbs through forest and undergrowth, occasionally opening up to reveal views. The trail also shadows part of Cypress Creek, a torrent that has cut a deep and narrow canyon. For more information , ask for the relevant BC Parks pamphlet at the infocentre or call 926-6007. To get here, take the #253 Caulfield/Park Royal bus .
