Centrally located in the imposing old city courthouse is the rather exorbitant Vancouver Art Gallery , located at the corner of Howe and Robson streets (late April to mid-Oct Mon-Wed & Fri-Sun 10am-5.30pm, Thurs 10am-9pm; mid-Oct to late April same hours but closed Mon; $10; tel 662-4700, www.vanartgallery.bc.ca ). It looks as if it ought to contain a treasure trove of art, but too much space is given to dud works of the sort that give modern art a bad name. What redeems the place are its temporary exhibitions and the powerful and almost surreal works of Emily Carr, who was born on Vancouver Island in 1871 and whose paintings - characterized by deep greens and blues - evoke something of the scale and intensity of the West Coast and its native peoples. A sparse international collection offers Warhol and Lichtenstein, with token rooms of half a dozen Italian, Flemish and British paintings. The gallery cafe is excellent, with a sun-trap of a terrace if you want to sit outside.
