Woodbrook
The elegant middle-class district of Woodbrook - between Tragarete Road, Philipps Street and the Maraval River - was originally a sugarcane estate owned by the Siegert family, creators of Trinidad's famous Angostura Bitters, and many of the streets still bear their names. The suburb has traditionally been a middle-class residential area, and its streets are still graced by old houses with wonderful fretwork bargeboards, delicate balustrades and finials. Though it has become increasingly commercialized in recent decades, it is a safe and pleasant area to stay, with several good restaurants and a handful of lively nightspots. Woodbrook is also home to numerous mas camps , which burst into life during Carnival season, from November to February. At the edge of Woodbrook, on Philipps Street, is the entrance to the Lapeyrouse Cemetery (daily 6am-6pm), a walled burial ground dating back to 1813 and filled with Victorian - as well as more modern - tombs. At the western end of Tragarete Road is the Queen's Park Oval (tel 868/622-4325), Trinidad's premier cricket ground . Hosting national and international matches between February and April, you'll pay TT$35-80 for a seat in the stands, or TT$150-180 for an all-inclusive ticket to the Trini Posse stand (food and drink included).
