UCLUELET (pop. 1733), 8km south of the main Hwy 4 Port Alberni junction, means "People of the Sheltered Bay", from the native word ucluth - "wind blowing in from the bay". It was named by the Nuu-chah-nulth, who lived here for centuries before the arrival of whites who came to exploit some of the world's richest fishing grounds immediately offshore. Today the port is still the third largest in BC by volume of fish landed, a trade that gives the town a slightly dispersed appearance and an industrial fringe - mainly lumber and canning concerns - and makes it a less appealing, if nonetheless popular base for anglers, whale-watchers, water-sports enthusiasts and tourists headed for Long Beach to the north. If you want a breath of air in town, the nearest trails are at Terrace Beach , just east of the town off Peninsula Road before the lighthouse. Buses and boats call here from Port Alberni and Tofino - a Laidlaw bus makes the road trip twice a day en route to and from Tofino and Port Alberni, with one connection daily from Port Alberni to Nanaimo and Victoria. Boats from Port Alberni usually dock here three days a week . There's plenty of accommodation (though less than Tofino), much of it spread on or just off Peninsula Road, the main approach to and through town from Hwy 4 . A car or bike is useful here, as there's relatively little in the small central area, though location isn't vital unless you want to be near the sea. For full details visit the infocentre at the main junction of Hwy 4 (daily June to early Sept daily 9am-6pm; tel 726-4641 or 726-7289, uco@ucluelet.com ).
