Denman and Hornby Islands are two outposts that have been described, with some justification, as the "undiscovered Gulf Islands". Big-name celebrities have recently bought property here, complementing a population made up of artists, craftspeople and a laid-back (if wary) mishmash of alternative types. Ferries drop you on Denman, with an infocentre clearly marked on the road from the terminal (tel 335-2293). To get to Hornby you need to head 11km across Denman to another terminal, where a fifteen-minute crossing ($4.50 return for foot passengers, $11.25 return for a car) drops you at Hornby's Shingle Spit dock. Most of what happens on Hornby, however, happens at Tribune Bay on the far side of the island, 10km away - try hitching a lift from a car coming off the ferry if you're without transport. There's no public transport on either island, so you'll need a car or bike to explore. Highlights on Denman, the less retrogressive of the islands, are the beaches of the Sandy Island Marine Park and the trails of Boyle Point Park to the Chrome Island Lighthouse. On Hornby you want to be looking at the Hellivel Provincial Park and its trails, the best a six-kilometre (1hr-1hr 30min) loop to Hellivel Bluffs, offering plenty of opportunities to see eagles, herons, spring wild flowers and lots of aquatic wildlife. Whaling Station Bay and Tribune Bay Provincial Park have good beaches (and there's a nudist beach at Little Tribune Bay).
