The bridge-linked islands of North and South Pender muster about a thousand people between them, many of whom will try to entice you into their studios to buy local arts and crafts. Ferries come here from Swartz Bay and Tsawwassen (from the latter foot-passenger one-way tickets cost $9, cars $35; $3 and $7 respectively for the former). The infocentre is at the ferry terminal in Otter Bay , 2332 Otter Bay Rd (daily mid-May to early Sept 9am-6pm; tel 629-6541) on North Pender, home of the Otter Bay Marina, where you can rent bikes and buy maps for a tour of the islands' rolling, hilly interior. The best beaches are at Hamilton (North Pender) and Mortimer Spit (South Pender). Accommodation -wise there are plenty of B&Bs, and a small wooded campsite at Prior Centennial Provincial Park, 6km south of the Otter Bay ferry terminal (March-Oct; $12). For the only hotel -type rooms, as opposed to B&Bs, try the Inn on Pender Island prettily situated in 7.5 acres of wooded country near Prior Park at 4709 Canal Rd, North Pender (tel 629-3353 or 1-800/550-0172; $60-80); or the Bedwell Harbour Island Resort , 9801 Spalding Rd, South Pender (tel 629-3212 or 1-800/663-2899, bedwell@islandnet.com ; March-Oct; $80-100), which has a pool, pub, restaurant, store, tennis, harbour views, canoe, boat and bike rentals, and a choice of rooms or cabins; or the three fully equipped self-catering cottages 500m sharp left from the ferry at Pender Lodge , 1325 MacKinnon Rd, North Pender (tel 629-3221; $100-125/$125-175; March-Oct), with tennis court, outdoor pool and private decks.
