Dubbed the "coast of fine meadows" by Jacques Cartier, the Cote-de-Beaupre stretches along the St Lawrence past the Basilique de Ste-Anne-de-Beaupre , 40km northeast of Quebec City, as far as the migratory bird sanctuary on Cap Tourmente, where you can see the greater snow goose in spring and autumn. There are two roads along the coast: the speedy Autoroute Dufferin-Montmorency (Hwy 440, then Hwy 138) and the slower avenue Royale (Hwy 360), which is served by local buses. The latter gives a far better introduction to the province's rural life, passing through little villages with ancient farmhouses and churches lining the way. Beyond Ste-Anne-de-Beaupre, Hwy 360 leads to one of the best ski resorts in the province - Mont Ste-Anne (tel 827-5281 or 1-800/463-1568, for snow conditions call 1-888/827-4579, www.mont-sainte-anne.com ), which has everything from golf to canyoning in summer. In winter, lift tickets are $40.85 per day and $18.25 for night skiing (4-10pm).
