Heading east from Levis towards the Gaspe Peninsula , the most scenic route is Hwy 132 , which sticks religiously to the St Lawrence shoreline - as opposed to the Trans-Canada (Hwy 20) that zips along to just past Riviere-du-Loup, effectively the start of the Gaspe Peninsula. Hwy 132 twists across a flat agricultural landscape, whose long, narrow fields are remnants of the old seigneurial system , and passes through a string of quiet villages overshadowed by their oversized Catholic churches. The three stops worth making on the 180-kilometre trip between Levis and Riviere-du-Loup are at the woodcarving centre of St-Jean-Port-Joli , the seigneurial St-Roche-des-Aulnaies and pretty Kamouraska , with its quaint architecture.
