Fifteen kilometres west of Chicoutimi, JONQUIERE thrives due to its Alcan aluminium smelter, one of the largest in the world, and its two paper mills. The smelter brought many Eastern European immigrants to the area when it was first opened in 1925, and the industry overtook the Price sons and their wood empire as the largest employer. A modern town with wide avenues, it can make a good stop for budget travellers because of an Allo-Stop office and train connections with Montreal - it also has a better nightlife than Chicoutimi.
