To the southeast, tiny anglophone Ile d'Entree is the only inhabited island not linked by land to the rest of the archipelago. Home to 175 people, this grassy hillock is encircled by footpaths and makes a pleasant day out, providing the sea is calm on the ferry trip from Cap-aux-Meules (Mon-Sat 2 daily; $20 return; tel 986-5705). Human-friendly horses and cows roam freely on the slopes of the Iles de la Madeleine's highest point, Big Hill (174m), accessible from the port by taking chemin Main and then chemin Post Office, and following the path across the fields to the top for a view of the whole archipelago. On your way towards the path, a tiny museum (opening hours vary, call 986-6622) displays island artefacts and historical household items. The only official lodging is the basic B&B Chez McLean (tel 986-4541; $40-60). Otherwise, you'll probably end up in someone's home - call the regional tourist office for more information (tel 986-2245). For food , there's a bar-restaurant and a grocery store near the port.
