Gaspe Practicalities

Practicalities

Buses to Gaspe stop on the main street, rue Jacques-Cartier, at the Motel Adams . The tourist office (mid-June to Aug daily 8am-8pm) is on the far side of the river from the town centre along Hwy 132; it has accommodation listings and maps of the town. College rooms are available during the summer at the CEGEP de la Gaspesie et des Iles at 94 rue Jacques-Cartier (tel 368-2749, www.cgaspesie.qc.ca ; up to $40). Most of the town's B&B accommodation is of high quality, but Les Petits Matins at 129 rue de la Reine (tel 368-1370; www.bbcanada.com/petitsmatins; $40-60) is definitely the best, located in an old bank building and with excellent breakfasts. Bargain-basement motel accommodation is available at Motel Plante , 137 rue Jacques-Cartier (tel 368-2254 or 1-888/368-2254, www.motelplante.com; $40-60).

Le Bourlingueur , next to the Jacques-Cartier mall opposite the main bridge at 207 de la Reine, is recommended for breakfast (around $4), though the Chinese and Canadian dishes on the evening menu are rather pricey, with main courses costing $13. Otherwise, Brise-Bise , 2 Cote Carter, is a great cafe and a swinging bar at night. Nearby La Fringale , a bakery at 10 rue Carter, is good for stocking up if you're heading for the parks;

a pre-wrapped sandwich and a drink will cost about $4. Healthy treats can be had at Croque Nature , 119 rue de la Reine, a natural-foods store. If you can afford to splurge, do it at the Cafe des Artistes , 249 boul Gaspe - it's one of the best restaurants on the peninsula for French cuisine. Even if you can't afford to dine there, the upstairs cigar room nestled under the eaves is worth a visit of its own. The owners also run an excellent cafe at 101 rue de la Reine.
