At the western tip of the Baie des Chaleurs, at the confluence of the Restigouche and Matapedia rivers, the tiny village of MATAPEDIA , a Micmac term meaning "there where the two rivers meet", is surrounded by steep green hills and lies at the centre of an excellent salmon-fishing region. Not a lot else happens here aside from canoe trips down the river, and the restaurants leave much to be desired: La Vieille Gare , at 50 boul Perron ouest, has somewhat pricey seafood fare, while the more reasonably priced but uninspired Cafe Resto-Bar Matapedia , at 13 rue des Saumons, is on the ground floor of the town's rather dilapidated youth hostel (tel 865-2444; up to $40). Close by, the Motel Restigouche , at no. 5 (tel 865-2155; $60-80), is the place to stay if you're into fishing and hunting, and the B&B Aux Bois d'Avignon , in nearby Saint-Alexis-de-Matapedia (tel 299-2537 or 1-877/767-8027; $40-60), provides large, attractive rooms and a pool. From Matapedia, Hwy 132 cuts north across the interior of the peninsula through Amqui, a dreary little town that serves as a ski resort in the winter, before heading back up to Ste-Flavie .
