Along the coastal road to the southwest of Perce, the dramatic mountains that dominate the north and east of the peninsula are replaced by a gently undulating landscape of wooded hills and farmland. Chandler , the first town of any size on this route, is an ugly lumber port notable solely for the wreck of the Peruvian freighter Unisol in the mouth of the harbour. It ran aground in a gale in 1983, allegedly because its captain, unable to negotiate entry into the port for his cement-laden vessel, got drunk and allowed the vessel to run onto the sandbank where it remains today. Beyond Chandler lies the Baie des Chaleurs , the long wedge of ocean that separates the heart of the Gaspe from New Brunswick. It was named by Jacques Cartier; as its name implies, this sheltered inlet has relatively warm waters and the bay is dotted with seaside resorts-cum-fishing villages and farming communities connected by the coastal highway.
