Situated just west of University Avenue along Dundas Street West, the Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO; Tues, Thurs & Fri 11am-6pm, Wed 11am-8.30pm, Sat & Sun 10am-5.30pm; recommended donation $6 plus fixed charges for temporary exhibitions; www.ago.on.ca ) is renowned both for its wide-ranging collection of foreign and domestic art and for its excellent temporary exhibitions. The gallery, however, is housed in an oddly discordant and rather confusing building, the result of several different phases of construction, and neither is there enough room to exhibit all of the permanent collection at any one time, which means that the exhibits are rotated. The exterior is a stern, modern facade decorated by a scaffold-like tower and a matching pair of Henry Moore sculptures, large and chunky bronzes uninspiringly called Large Two Forms . Inside, the AGO's Street Level focuses on Walker Court, which boasts European works, and there is an excellent art shop and cafe here too. The Upper Level holds contemporary art, a superb sample of Canadian paintings and an extensive collection of Henry Moore sculptures. Museum maps are issued free at reception.
