With its amusement parks and fast-food joints, there's nothing subtle about WASAGA BEACH , but the beach is of fine golden sand, the swimming excellent and you can rent out all manner of watercraft from jet skis through to canoes. There's also one historical curiosity at the Nancy Island Historic Site (mid-May to late June Sat & Sun 10am-6pm; late June to Aug daily 10am-6pm; mid-Sept to mid-Oct Sat-Wed 10am-5pm; free, but parking charge), on the main drag - Mosley Street - behind Beach Area 2. In the War of 1812, the Americans managed to polish off the few British ships stationed in the upper Great Lakes without too much difficulty, and the last Royal Navy vessel, the supply ship Nancy , hid out here, just beyond the bay at the mouth of the Nottawasaga River. The Americans tracked down and sunk the Nancy , but silt subsequently collected round the sunken hull to create Nancy Island. In 1927, the hull was raised from the silt and today it forms the main exhibit of the island's museum, whose imaginative design resembles the sails of a schooner. Wasaga Beach makes for a good day's swimming and sunbathing, but if you do decide to stay the night there are lots of reasonably priced motels to choose from as well as cottages and campsites - just drive along Mosley Street until someplace takes your fancy. Alternatively, the local Chamber of Commerce's year-round information centre at 550 River Rd W, in Beach Area 1 (Mon-Sat 9am-5pm, Sun 10am-4pm; tel 705/429-2247 or 1-866/292-7242), will help you find accommodation.
