Practicalities
There are no buses to Goderich, but there is a tourist office , beside Hwy 21 at Nelson and Hamilton, a couple of minutes' walk northeast of the central circus (mid-May to Aug Mon-Sat 9am-7pm, Sun 10am-7pm; Sept to early Oct Mon-Fri 9am-4pm; tel 519/524-6600). They have details of the town's twenty-odd B&Bs , which average out at about $50 per double per night. One of the more appealing (and expensive) options is the Colborne B&B , 72 Colborne St (tel 519/524-7400 or 1-800/390-4612, fax 519/524-4943; $60-80), in a large, plain-brick building dating from the early twentieth century and located just to the west of the central circus; there are four guestrooms here, all en suite. Much better, however, is Twin Porches B&B , 55 Nelson St E at Victoria (tel 519/524-5505; $40-60; May-Oct), in a lovely and well-kept Edwardian house of buff-coloured brick embellished with fine gingerbread scrollwork. Also near the central circus - and metres from both the tourist office and a petrol station - this B&B, with its antique furnishings, has three air-conditioned guestrooms with shared bathroom. The hotel scene is less varied, but the reasonably priced Hotel Bedford , right in the centre at 92 Court House Square (tel 519/524-7337; $60-80), is certainly distinctive. Built in 1896, the Bedford has an enormous open stairwell fitted with a grandiose wooden staircase just like a saloon in a John Ford movie - though the modernized rooms beyond are a bit of a disappointment. Much better is the plush Benmiller Inn (tel 519/524-2191 or 1-800/265-1711, fax 519/524-5150, www.benmiller.on.ca ; $175-240), which occupies a converted 1830s woollen mill in an attractive wooded dell east of Goderich. To get there, take Hwy 8 out of town and watch for the sign after about 6km. There's camping near Goderich, too, just 7km north along the lakeshore at Point Farms Provincial Park (mid-May to early Oct; tel 519/524-7124). For food , you're hardly spoiled for choice, but Big Daddy's Pizza and Grill , 42 West St (tel 519/524-7777), serves up tasty, standard dishes at reasonable prices. The more upscale Robindale's , across from the tourist office at 80 Hamilton St (tel 519/524-4171), is a comparatively formal restaurant where the pork dishes are delicious. The Park House , 168 West St, is the town's liveliest bar and has wide views of Lake Huron.
