Heading west from Thunder Bay on Hwy 17, it's a long, gruelling drive of almost 500km through the interminable pine forests of the Canadian Shield to the next town of any real interest, Kenora , where hundreds of fishermen gather every summer before sidling off into the vast Lake of the Woods . The lake straddles the Ontario-Manitoba border and Kenora is itself just 200km from Winnipeg . Regular long-distance buses ply Hwy 17 - and remember you save an hour when you cross into Central Standard Time near the start of the journey, about 60km west of Thunder Bay.
