A good twenty-minute walk west of the Station Mall, Canal Drive crosses one of the river's narrow channels to reach St Mary's Island, home to the Sault Ste Marie Canal National Historic Site (open access). Here, you can stroll along the lock and investigate the old stone buildings that surround it with the help of a series of explanatory plaques. It's all mildly interesting - and if you're nautical interest is stimulated there are two-hour cruises through the Soo lock system with Lock Tours Canada (June to mid-Oct 2-4 daily; $19; tel 705/253-9850). Cruises leave from beside the Roberta Bondar Pavilion.
