Hwy 17 loops inland from White River to skirt an enormous headland that harbours Pukaskwa National Park , a chunk of hilly boreal forest interspersed with muskeg and lake that rolls down to a stunningly beautiful coastline. The only access to the park is from the north down the 15km-long Hwy 627, which forks off from Hwy 17 just short of Marathon and 85km west of White River. Hwy 627 goes to Hattie Cove , where there is the park's one and only serviced campsite , three sandy beaches and a visitor centre (early June to Sept daily 8.30am-6.30pm; tel 807/229-0801), which sells trail guides and backcountry camping permits. From here, the Coastal Hiking Trail travels 60km south through the boreal forest and over the ridges and cliffs of the Canadian Shield. It is not an easy hike by any means, but it is simply magnificent and there are regular backcountry campsites on the way. In the summer boats will drop you off at various points along the trail, so you can just hike one-way back to Hattie Cove.
