From Rossport, it's 80km to NIPIGON , where Hwy 11 finishes its mammoth trek across Northern Ontario to merge into Hwy 17. After a further 35km or so, Hwy 17 reaches the 11-kilometre-long turning that leads north away from the lake to one of the region's more spectacular sights in Ouimet Canyon Provincial Park (mid-May to early Oct daily; free; day-use only). The canyon was formed during the last ice age, when a sheet of ice 2km thick crept southward, bulldozing a fissure 3km long, 150m wide and 150m deep. Nearly always deserted, the canyon has two lookout points that hang over the terrifyingly sheer sides looking down to the permanently dark base - an anomalous frozen habitat whose perpetual snow supports some very rare arctic plants. The vistas are especially stimulating in the autumn, when the forests flash red, orange and yellow.
