Heading north from Sault Ste Marie on Hwy 17, it's about 120km to the southern perimeter of Lake Superior Provincial Park (April-Oct), which offers ready access to Lake Superior's granite shoreline and its immediate hinterland. Autumn is the best time to visit, when the blackflies have abated and the forests of sugar maples and yellow birch are an orgy of colour, but the scenery and wildlife are enthralling throughout the year. Moose, chipmunks and beavers are the commonest mammals, sharing their habitat with more elusive species including white-tailed deer, woodland caribou, coyote, timber wolves and black bears, as well as myriad migratory and resident birds. Hwy 17 cuts through the park for around 100km, passing three campsites, a series of trailheads and, after about 70km, the Park Office (May-Oct daily 9am-6pm; tel 705/856-2284), which sells hiking and canoe route maps as well as backcountry camping permits ($6.50). These are compulsory. The office also has information on vacancies at the park's three major campsites . These are the basic Crescent Lake (late June to late Sept) on the southern boundary, popular Agawa Bay (mid-May to late Sept), 8km further north and right on Lake Superior, plus Rabbit Blanket Lake (May-Oct) just north of the Park Office and ideal for forays into the interior. The last two campsites have electrical hook-ups, showers and laundry facilities. Prices are $16-23 per pitch; pay at the campsite. Day-use parking costs $8.50 per vehicle, overnight $6.50. The rangers will warn you if weather conditions look perilous, but always expect the worst - the park receives more rain and snow than any other area in Ontario. There are no park services of any kind from November to April, when service roads (but not of course Hwy 17) are barred and gated.
