Highway 11 cuts a 1000km arc through Northern Ontario, eventually meeting up with Hwy 17 as it nears Thunder Bay . En route, it links a string of gritty resource towns, who endure a climate which, far from the moderating effects of Lake Superior, is as savage as any in the world. In winter, Hwy 11 is subject to ferocious blizzards, which make it impassable to ordinary vehicles, and at any time of the year there is no point in travelling much of the highway at all. Content yourself with the first stretch, the 400km trip from North Bay , a small lakeshore town with hotels and motels, to Cochrane , even smaller but the starting point for the region's star turn, the train ride to Moosonee , beyond the road network close to the frozen shores of James Bay. Trains and buses connect most of the larger settlements between North Bay and Cochrane, but you really need a car to be sure of getting where you want, when you want - and you don't want to be hanging around too long for a connection. The train from Cochrane to Moosonee is operated by Ontario Northland and should be booked in advance. Note also that food and drink are more expensive in this region than elsewhere in Ontario; on many occasions, your best bet is to eat where you sleep.
