Algoma Central Railway Practicalities

Practicalities

The Soo's Greyhound bus station is handily located at 73 Brock St and Bay, in between Queen Street East and the waterfront. Local and provincial information is available at the Ontario Travel Centre , 261 Queen St W (daily: mid-May to mid-June & Sept 8am-6pm; mid-June to Aug 8am-8pm; Oct to mid-May 8.30am-5pm; tel 705/945-6941), a ten-minute walk west from the bus station along Queen Street.

Amongst the town's many chain motels and hotels , two of the most convenient are the Sleep Inn , at the east end of downtown, close to the waterfront at 727 Bay St (tel 705/253-7533 or 1-800/753-3746, fax 705/253-7667; $80-100), and the Days Inn , plumb in the centre, steps from the ACR station at 320 Bay St and Bruce (tel 705/759-8200 or 1-800/329-7466, fax 705/942-9500; $80-100). More distinctively, one good downtown B&B is Brockwell Chambers , in a sturdy, two-storey Edwardian house at 183 Brock St and Wellington Street East (tel & fax 705/949-1076; $60-80); they have three pleasantly furnished guestrooms, all en suite. The town's cheapest accommodation is in the youth hostel , in the former Algonquin Hotel , at the east end of the centre at 865 Queen St E and Pim (tel 705/253-2311; $30 doubles).

For food , Ernie's Coffee Shop , 13 Queen St E at Gore (Tues-Sat 7am-7pm), is a popular and inexpensive spot serving breakfast specials for as little as $3.95, and jukeboxes on each table. Also great fun is Mike's Lunch ,

518 Queen St E at Spring, a classic 1960s diner with high stools, a long counter and old pictures of the Soo plastered on the walls. The best downtown restaurant is A Thymely Manner , 531 Albert St at Brock (tel 705/759-3262; Tues-Sun), which is well known for its lamb from nearby St Joseph's Island and its great Caesar salad; reservations are a must. Otherwise, try well-prepared and well-presented Italian dishes at Cesira's , 133 Spring St at Albert (tel 705/949-0600).
