From the Chateau Laurier Hotel, it's a short stroll east to Sussex Drive , whose southern section is one of Ottawa's oldest streets: the stone buildings between George and St Patrick hark back to Ottawa's pioneer days and now house expensive shops and galleries. Nearby Major's Hill Park was the area chosen by Colonel By as the site of his home so he could overlook the progress of the canal - the extant foundations bear a plaque attesting to its history. The park has a fine setting, its peace disturbed only by the Noon Day Gun (except Sun, so as not to disturb churchgoers), a tradition introduced in 1869 to regulate the postal service. Major's Hill Park leads towards Nepean Point , an area of land that juts out into the Ottawa River, with excellent views of the Chaudiere Falls, Hull and the Laurentian Mountains.
