Practicalities
The tiny airport is located on the base, just a few kilometres north of town. As there's no shuttle bus or public transport, you'll have to rely on renting a car. Tilden and Budget have booths at the airport and both charge about $40 per day, with the first 100km per day free. To get to town, take C Street and Loring Drive and turn right at the traffic lights (the only ones in town) onto Hamilton River Road. On the way into Goose Bay, notice the metal chain-link fence indicating that you've left the base and entered civilian territory. Taxis cost about $7.50 to Goose Bay, $10 to Happy Valley. The helpful staff at the Visitor Centre , 365 Hamilton River Rd (June-Aug daily 9am-9pm; Sept-May Mon-Fri 9am-5pm; tel 896-8787) will provide you with brochures and help you plan your trips out of town to places such as North West River . Some of the staff will even act as your tour guides. Happy Valley-Goose Bay, as befits its status as a transport hub, has a reasonable range of accommodation . The three best choices - all fairly standard motel-type lodgings with the usual facilities - are the large, prefabricated Aurora Hotel , 382 Hamilton River Rd (tel 896-3398 or 1-800/563-3066, www.aurorahotel.com ; $80-100/$100-125), or the impersonal Labrador Inn next door (tel 896-3351 or 1-800/563-2763; $80-100), both in Goose Bay; and the Royal Inn , 3 Royal St (tel 896-2456, royal.inn@sympatico.ca; $60-80/$80-100), in Happy Valley. The best places to eat are Tricia Dee's , 96 Hamilton River Rd, specializing in steaks and ribs, and the Midway Gardens Restaurant , 350 Hamilton River Rd. At Trappers Cabin Bar and Grill , 1 Aspen Rd, you cook your steak yourself on their grill. Happy Valley-Goose Bay is a hard-drinking town, so there are plenty of places to quench your thirst: liveliest are Mulligan's Pub , 368 Hamilton River Rd, and Maxwell's II/Bentley's , 97 Hamilton River Rd, the town's main nightspot.
